About the Retreat

Come join us for four days of dancing and music in central Idaho. The Salmon Wild River Camp is led by fabulous Dances of Universal Peace leaders from Idaho, Montana… and even Tennessee this year! This diverse team will carry us through the many spiritual traditions of the world in the ancient practice of community circle dance.

What We Do

No experience or partner needed. Each dance is taught in place: we are given a short song, easy steps, and the meaning (or attunement) of what we are doing. We do songs from a wide variety of sources: native, Christianity, Judaism or eastern Sufi practices. Often they are simple chants or inspiring poems.

The magic is the circle. Each person (you included) is what creates the magic. Humans evolved singing and celebrating in circle dance. As soon as you step into the circle you’ll know you are home.

Musicians

As you arrive at camp please let us know about your musicianship! We coordinate acoustic musicians into our dance sessions. You’ll want to play with us! We’ll also have a dance/music jam in the afternoons.

Yes… the camp is very inexpensive. This is because we love what we do. This is not about making money, but about coming together. plus, we don’t have to pay for our tent location, lodging/camping/food is on your own — and we need you!

Where is Salmon?

We are dancing in Salmon, Idaho along the Continental Divide in Central Idaho. We have a 30 foot round tent which is a magical place to camp. There is lots of room for camping nearby, and there are motels nearby in town to stay.

Camping Can Be Fun… click to learn more.

From Zareen: My goal for this camp is to provide an inexpensive space where we can all come together, sing, dance, and dive deeper into new possibilities. Perhaps things we haven’t really thought about, such as: How science and spirituality intersect, the conditioned mind and community issues, the non-dual wisdom of Turtle Island. We honor the importance of giving indigenous people space to recreate themselves after generations of trauma rather than appropriating ceremonies we don’t understand. Most importantly, how we use this time to also recreate ourselves into co-creating relatives of the world rather than individual consumers. The overall vision is to come alive in new ways and jumpstart a dynamic participation in life that transforms the world… in other words: Sam Lewis’s Peace Project.

About our dates and location

Our event location opens up on Wednesday the 21st, and stays available through Monday. So we can come early and stay late. You are certainly welcome to arrive on Wednesday June 21st and get set up for camp. We’ll be finishing the tent setup on Wednesday and have a jam in the tent. Although the last dance will be on Sunday morning of June 25th, you are welcome to stay and play until Monday.

Food

Shopping & Restaurants

There are lots of places for food in Salmon, these are our favorites.

  1. Harvest Grocery: A small organic grocery store on Main Street. They are open on Sundays. On Main Street, in a brick building on the south side.
  2. Saveway Market: Is really the only grocery store in Salmon. Drive into town and they are at the first stop light. They are Western Family and have a great selection of organic these days. Good vegetable section. Warning: Store is completely closed on Sunday!
  3. Good Fellows Bakery: A fantastic artisan bakery. Great lunches. Amazing bread. Main street, north side.
  4. Bertram’s Brewery: Great lunches, dinners and home brew. South side of Main Street.
  5. Nature’s Pantry: Health Food store. Closed Sunday,
  6. Country Store: Up on the “Bar Hill” on Courthouse Drive: Local milk, eggs, cheese and yogurt.
  7. Farmer’s Market Saturday morning: in the park by the bridge.

Lodging

There is lots of room to camp near the tent. Lots of room for campers and RVs. No hookups. Good motels are in town approx. 5 miles from where we camp (Salmon is small).

Two small rooms are available on the ranch, and there are three rooms available in Wayne and Connie’s house in town. Each room is an additional $200 per person, for all four days.

To reserve these rooms text Wayne: 208-756-8137

Other Lodging in Salmon, approx 5 miles

  1. Stagecoach Inn: This is the nicest motel in town. It’s right on the river and an easy drive to the tent location.  It’s $100+ a night. Website 208-756-2919
  2. Super 8: This motel is also quite close, and lots cheaper. Website 208-756-8880
  3. Andrea’s RV Park. They are right on the river and have RV hookups. They also have one small “hostel” cabin. Website 208-756-2063
  4. River Front Inn… I think that’s the new name… Used to be Wagons West and that’s how you find it on Google. Very cheap motel, but right on the river and nice folks. It’s only cheap because the building is really old. 208-756-4281. Waiting for them to call back with rates.
  5. Bear Country Inn: Down on Main Street. A new motel. $70 and up. http://bearcountryinnsalmon.com 208-756-1499
  6. Sacajawea Inn: I think this is the cheapest motel, or equal to River Front Inn. It’s not trashy. This motel is on the south side of Salmon, so it is the shortest drive to the tent spot. Nice people. 208-756-2294 (I think)

Find the Dance

We’ll be dancing in our 30′ tent. Bring your own chair. There isn’t lots of room to have chairs for everyone in the tent, but lots of room outside in the meadow. It may be cool in June but we have a stove for our tent. If it’s cool we can also build a nice outdoor fire for evenings. We’ll post more pictures as we get some work done on the spot.

Below is a satellite shot of the Hyde Ranch where we will be dancing. This is a special spot this year as the owner, Mike, is a vital member of progressive groups in Salmon. He is a Salmon native, and will help us bring Salmon folks out for dancing. We will be adding a lot of music, fun and love into his life, and he’ll be creating a firm foundation for our retreat.

Heading into the tent… ready to dance!

Cost

$50 per person. Further donations for dance leaders are appreciated.

What’s it Like? Dancing with us is like joining a tribe. When we first come together we often don’t know each other’s name, but become immediate brothers and sisters. The camp is held by elder wisdom with experienced leaders who have been doing this for over thirty years. Often something new like this can be uncomfortable, but we know how to bring you in with a smooth transition from aloneness to togetherness. There is an essence in every human being that yearns for togetherness. We use our feet, simple music and ancient wisdom to create a moving space of heart.

Come dance with us. The minute you step into the circle you come home to your heart.
