We’ve spent several sessions talking about the deeper aspects of the Dances – their energy and power, ways to work with that, and why we are attracted to this practice. Now let’s take that foundational awareness into the realm of the practical: How do you lead a dance? (This will be helpful for leaders, and for Dancers and musicians, as well!)

We’ve all had the experience of being gently led into a space beyond the personal, beyond words, by skillful Dance leaders. How do they DO that? How can YOU do it? Let’s consider the basics: teaching foreign words to people. Singing and projecting to be heard (you can too, truly). Handling interruptions. Setting up a partner Dance. Giving an attunement (not always at the beginning). Knowing how much to talk (or not). Knowing when to call for high and low voices. When “on the breath” is (and isn’t) appropriate. How to work with your musicians. How a guitar helps you. How long should the dance go? What if things go badly… can you stop and start again? How to end a dance? What’s a seal?
