After all, the leader teaches the dance, starts the music, guides the movements, and keeps everything flowing. But the more I lead dances, the more convinced I become that the true power of the dances doesn’t come from the leader at all.

It comes from the dancers.

The leader facilitates. The musicians support. But the dancers create the circle.

Sky beautifully described it this way:

“The circle becomes something much larger than a group of individuals holding hands. As the circle moves in the dance, the energy goes beyond the personal and becomes a vehicle for sending out prayers—a prayer wheel. The dancers make the circle, create the energy, and power the prayer.”

That understanding changes everything.

The Dance Is Not a Performance

Many beginning dance leaders feel pressure to perform. They compare themselves to experienced leaders or worry about making mistakes. They imagine they are standing in front of an audience that expects perfection.

But the dances are not a performance.

They are something we create together.

I remember watching a leader who had just finished teaching a dance. As she began leading it, she suddenly had one of those completely human moments when her mind simply went blank. She forgot where the dance was going and started moving in the wrong direction.

What happened next was wonderful.

The dancers simply carried the dance.

Without hesitation they continued the movements together until she found her place again. Watching this happen, I laughed and said loudly enough for everyone to hear, “See why the dancers are so important?”

Immediately the whole circle came alive. The dancers realized they weren’t passive participants. They were essential to making the dance happen.

That’s exactly how it should be.

Community Instead of Perfection

Every dance leader has stories of forgetting words, forgetting melodies, or forgetting how to begin a chant they’ve sung hundreds of times.

These moments don’t diminish the dance.

If anything, they deepen it.

Mistakes remind everyone that we’re human. They dissolve the illusion that someone has to be perfect. They replace performance with community.

When the atmosphere is welcoming instead of perfectionistic, everyone relaxes. Laughter appears. Compassion appears. The dance becomes real.

The Circle Holds Everyone

The strength of the dances is that everyone contributes.

Experienced dancers naturally help newcomers remember the words. Partners quietly guide one another through unfamiliar movements. Someone who knows the chant sings a little more clearly so others can find the melody.

The leader cannot possibly do all of this alone.

The circle itself becomes the teacher.

This is especially important when people arrive carrying life’s challenges.

One community shared the story of a woman in the early stages of dementia who was hesitant to attend because she feared embarrassment. Instead, the circle welcomed her completely. She often forgot where she was in the dance, but she always left joyful. The dancers naturally helped her without drawing attention to her difficulties.

Another leader described dancing with her autistic son. The circle accepted him exactly as he was. He participated in his own way, moving differently, sometimes avoiding eye contact, yet feeling completely welcomed and included.

These moments reveal something profound.

The dances are not about everyone doing everything perfectly.

They are about creating a community where everyone belongs.

Creating Unity

The purpose of the dances is unity.

Unity doesn’t happen because someone tells people to feel more connected.

You can’t command a group to become more loving.

You can’t announce, “Now everyone go deeper.”

Instead, unity grows organically.

It grows through simple chants.

Simple movements.

Shared breathing.

Walking together.

Listening together.

Many experienced leaders begin with very simple practices before the first dance even starts. Some invite everyone to walk together while synchronizing breath and footsteps. Others begin with a long, shared “Om.” Still others start with peaceful walking dances that gently invite people into a common rhythm before introducing more structured movements.

These simple beginnings accomplish something profound.

People stop arriving as separate individuals.

They begin arriving as a circle.

Simplicity Has Great Power

Beginning leaders sometimes want to choose their most beautiful or complicated dance.

Yet simple mantric dances often create the greatest depth.

A straightforward chant with easy movements allows everyone to participate immediately. Nobody feels inadequate. Nobody gets left behind trying to remember complicated choreography.

Once the circle has become unified, more elaborate dances can unfold naturally.

Complicated dances certainly have their place. But they require time, patience, and careful teaching. If a dance contains many words, partner exchanges, or intricate movements, the leader must be willing to slow down until everyone is comfortable.

The goal is never simply to finish the dance.

The goal is to become one circle.

Musicians and Leaders Have a Different Role

While dancers have the freedom to disappear into the experience, leaders and musicians carry another responsibility.

One dance leader described it beautifully:

“I’m driving the bus.”

Everyone else gets to enjoy the scenery.

The leader has to remember the next verse, watch the circle, maintain the tempo, support newcomers, and keep everything moving smoothly. The musicians carry similar responsibilities. They must stay present enough to support the entire group rather than becoming lost in their own experience.

This is why preparation matters so much.

The more deeply a leader knows the dance, the more effortlessly everyone else can relax into it.

Supporting Rather Than Correcting

One challenge every leader faces is what to do when someone in the circle isn’t paying attention or is disrupting the unity.

The temptation is to correct them.

But criticism almost always separates rather than unites.

Instead of policing the circle, we can invite people more deeply into it.

Sometimes that invitation comes through slowing the music.

Sometimes through simplifying the movements.

Sometimes through a collective breath.

Sometimes simply through the warmth and steadiness of the dancers standing beside them.

The dancers themselves become the guardians of the circle.

They quietly support one another without judgment.

The Circle Is the Teacher

Perhaps the greatest lesson is this:

No one comes to the dances as a customer.

Everyone comes as a participant.

Some people contribute by leading.

Some by drumming.

Some by singing.

Some by quietly helping the person next to them.

Some simply by showing up with an open heart.

Every role matters.

Without dancers, there is no circle.

Without the circle, there is no prayer.

The deepest power of the Dances of Universal Peace lies not in any individual leader but in the willingness of ordinary people to move, breathe, sing, and pray together.

When everyone understands that they are part of creating the experience, something extraordinary happens.

The dance ceases to be entertainment.

It becomes ceremony.

It becomes community.

It becomes a living expression of unity.

This would also work well as a chapter in your dance leadership book. If you’d like, I can make it read even more like one of your teaching essays by bringing your personal voice and storytelling style forward while tightening the prose further.

The Dancers Make the Circle When people think about the Dances of Universal Peace, they often assume that the dance leader is the most important person in the room.
